This is a short clip of a song in Bearnais, the regional language of Pau! Like many regional languages in Europe and throughout the world, Bearnais has been dying out, and only the older people in small villages really know how to speak it. However, each year, Carnaval is conducted half in Bearnais.
This was filmed after the opening parade of Carnaval, at the Hotel de Ville, and that is the mayor...

verlan.
So today, in my French language classes, we studied Verlan. That is the name of a kind of slang in the French language that is formed by taking the first syllable of a word and moving it to the end of the word.
This post is about to become a bit more grammatical than usual. But bear with me - it’s really interesting, I promise! :]
So, for everyone out there who speaks Pig Latin, Verlan is...
more updates from pau.
Hello everyone!
I realize that I have been a very bad blogger. I haven’t really gone anywhere on the weekends, so that’s probably the main reason for my lack of updates. I’ve just been enjoying Pau and hanging out with my new friends, and adjusting to my schedule at school.

I met three other girls from USAC at the bus station downtown at about 7:00, and then we wandered around and sat down at at cafe...
yet more text.
Words words words. I promise that someday soon I will have some more photos. :] I stopped carrying my camera everywhere because now that I’m going to classes, I want to try to blend in as much as possible, and nothing says “I’m an American, look at me, look at me!” like taking a picture of the dining hall. Haha.
Today I had my first class in Phonetics. For an hour, I sat...
the end of my second weekend.
Wow. I cannot believe that I’ve only been here for a week and a half!! It’s ridiculous. I feel like months and months have passed. It seems like a year is going to be forever…
Today, I didn’t do much. I stayed at home because the buses don’t run today and I didn’t really need anything urgently, so I decided to be lazy. :] Instead I read some more Emma - I am...
lost in translation
Today, since I have no class, I decided to go out and buy some groceries for dinner this week. There is a discount grocery story right next to a bakery not far from my house, so I went there and shopped around for about half an hour before I stood in line to check out.
It is very important in France to say “Bonjour” or “Bonsoir” to the person inside every shop you enter....
