And here I present… the awesomely boring picture of the view from my window!!! :] Haha. It’s not boring to me - but this photo doesn’t do it justice. Some foggy morning, I will try to capture the essence of “Waking Up In Pau”: streetlights coloring everything pink and gold, fog descending among the houses, and a cool wet breeze just coming through the open window. It is beautiful. It is certainly good motivation for getting up out of bed, and for me, that is saying a lot!
Today I went to the French book store in the shopping center right next to the university. It’s called “Fnac.” I found the tiny section with books in English. It was the weirdest thing ever!! They had Twilight, Grapes of Wrath, The Picture of Dorian Gray, a bunch of new fiction paperback-y stuff, and about 50 “companion books” - the kind that explain the themes of the book and everything. But there were no books to go with the companion books!! Haha.
Not liking the idea of being alone in France with only John Steinbeck to comfort me, I decided to check out the USAC library instead. In the USAC office, there are a few shelves of books that Ryan and Robina call the “library,” and we can check them out whenever we want. There were a few in English that were left by previous students… they had very interesting taste! I found one called “The Red and the Black” by Stenhal (a penname… the author is French but I can’t remember his real name). Anyway, I checked it out and I’ve started it, and so far it’s VERY French. It was written in 1830, so a lot of it is about post-Bonapartiste France. I suppose it is way more appropriate to read in France than Jane Austen. And I’ll take anything over Steinbeck!!! Haha. :]
I really wish I’d brought a copy of Wuthering Heights, actually. That is one of the few books that I like so much that I could read it over and over again and still enjoy it. It’s pretty much my favorite at this point, actually!
Anyway. This didn’t have very much to do with my experiences in France, but it included a picture, so that is more exciting than usual. I went grocery shopping again and succeeding in weighing the fruit BEFORE getting in line. Now I’m going to take a shower and sleep! Yay!
With love,
Leanne
